Sobremesa
Project Introduction: This project was designed for an Introduction to Architectural Interiors course in March 2023. The parameters were to create a novel dining space that provides users with a specific but immersive experience. The restaurant should be either fast-casual or full service but may not be exclusive and should be set up to accommodate for as many people as possible. The project is to be set in a traditional neighborhood in Cali, Colombia.
Design Concept: To create an experiential restaurant informed by the rich theatrical/performative history of Cali and the legacy of Enrique Buenaventura. Sobremesa will be organized to mimic a theater, with a seating area set up around a central stage to provide patrons the chance to fully immerse themselves in the performances.
Inspiration: While researching the site, I learned that Cali has a rich history in theater and the performing arts. Besides dance, Cali is also known for revolutionizing the way Latin American theater is practiced thanks to Enrique Buenaventura's conception of the idea of "creacion colectiva." In this method, all the participants of the play (including the audience) become involved with the dramatic text and its staging. This inspired the theme behind my restaurant- a blend between a theater/performance venue and a restaurant, where patrons can enjoy their dinner with a show. Organizationally, this means that the restaurant will include a main stage, which will be in view of every seat. The dining space will be divided into different zones, each with varying opportunity for participation. Visually, the restaurant will be dark and moody, incorporating dark reds and black as well as metallics to pull classic theater design elements into a more modern look. Dim ambient lighting gives Sobremesa an intimate feel and places emphasis on the well-lit stage.
